Professional cleaning doesn't have to mean harsh chemicals. Many of the most effective cleaning solutions use simple, natural ingredients that are safer for your family, pets and the environment — and are often cheaper too.

Here are 7 eco-friendly cleaning tips that genuinely work, based on our experience as professional cleaners.

1. White Vinegar for Glass & Mirrors

A 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water in a spray bottle gives a streak-free shine on glass, mirrors and stainless steel. Apply with a microfibre cloth for best results. Avoid on natural stone surfaces like marble — the acid can etch them.

2. Baking Soda for Scrubbing

Baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) is a gentle abrasive that's perfect for scrubbing bathroom tiles, grout lines, sinks and oven interiors. Make a paste with water, apply, leave for 10 minutes, then scrub and rinse. For ovens, leave overnight for heavy build-up.

3. Lemon for Cutting Boards & Microwaves

Rub half a lemon over a wooden cutting board to deodorise and disinfect. For microwaves, heat a bowl of water with lemon slices for 3–5 minutes — the steam loosens food splatters and the lemon neutralises odours. Wipe clean with a damp cloth.

4. Salt for Cast Iron & Stubborn Stains

Coarse salt acts as a scrubbing agent without the chemical residue. Use it on cast iron cookware (with a little oil) to clean without damaging the seasoning, or sprinkle on a fresh carpet stain to absorb liquid before vacuuming.

5. Tea Tree Oil for Mould

Add 10–15 drops of tea tree essential oil to a spray bottle of water. Spray on mouldy grout, bathroom ceilings or window tracks, leave for an hour, then scrub. Tea tree is a natural antifungal. Note: it has a strong smell that fades as it dries.

6. Microfibre Cloths Instead of Paper Towel

Microfibre cloths clean effectively with just water on most surfaces — no chemical needed. They're reusable, reduce waste and are more effective at trapping dust and bacteria than cotton cloths or paper towel. Wash them separately in hot water to kill bacteria.

7. Castile Soap for a General All-Purpose Cleaner

A few drops of liquid castile soap in a spray bottle of water makes an effective, biodegradable all-purpose cleaner for most household surfaces. It's plant-based, non-toxic and safe around children and pets. Avoid mixing with vinegar — they cancel each other out.

A Note on Limitations

Eco-friendly products work well for maintenance cleaning. For deep-clean situations — heavy oven grease, mould remediation, industrial kitchens, bond cleans — professional-grade products and equipment are usually necessary to achieve the required standard.
